Sliding sash windows in Northwood

Metroland at its most generous, with large houses on wooded plots and a lot of original detail still in place.

What is built in Northwood

Northwood was developed as a superior Metroland suburb, and the housing reflects that: substantial interwar detached and semi-detached houses on generous plots, many with Arts and Crafts influence in their tile hanging, timbering and leaded detail, set among mature trees. There is later twentieth century development around them and some Victorian and Edwardian stock nearer the older routes, with Northwood Hills a slightly plainer version of the same pattern.

What that means for your windows

Houses built to look handmade do not take a crisp white plastic frame well, and the mismatch is what people notice even when they cannot name it. Texture solves most of it, so the woodgrain foils and a colour chosen against the brick and tile hanging matter more here than the technical specification does. Dual colour is useful on this stock too, letting a darker external shade sit against the tiles while the rooms stay light under heavy tree cover.

Two ways to buy in Northwood

Northwood is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.

  • Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
  • Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.

Questions we get asked in Northwood

Can you reproduce a leaded or divided pattern from the 1930s?

The divided pane pattern can be reproduced with Georgian bars inside the sealed unit or external astragal bars, and the layout is set to match what is there. Take a photograph of an original window before it is removed, because it is the simplest way to record a pattern accurately for the specification.

Which colours work on a tile-hung Metroland house?

Usually a woodgrain rather than a flat finish, because it sits with the texture of the tiles and timbering. Golden Oak, Irish Oak and Rosewood are the darker three of the five woodgrain foils. Beyond those any classic RAL shade can be sprayed or a Farrow and Ball colour matched, and dual colour lets the inside stay light.
