Sliding sash windows in Haddenham

A village with a building material of its own, and a lot of walls that were never built straight.

What is built in Haddenham

Haddenham is known for witchert, the local chalky earth walling used for cottages and boundary walls throughout the older parts of the village, usually rendered and limewashed with a tiled or thatched roof. Those buildings cluster around the church, the pond and the older greens. Beyond that historic core the village has expanded considerably through the twentieth century and since, with conventional brick housing of every recent decade toward the station and the main road.

What that means for your windows

Earth built walls behave differently from brick. They are thick, they are not flat, and their openings are not square, so a window ordered from a standard size list will not fit properly and will look wrong even if it does. Every opening gets measured individually, and shaped frames are available where the head of an opening is curved. On the modern side of the village none of that applies and the specification is straightforward, which is why the survey is what tells us which conversation we are having.

Two ways to buy in Haddenham

Haddenham is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.

  • Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
  • Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.

Questions we get asked in Haddenham

Do you work on older cottages with earth or rendered walls?

Yes. The important part is measuring each opening on site rather than working from a schedule, because walls of that construction are thick and rarely true, and the frame has to be made to what is actually there. Shaped frames are available where the opening is not a simple rectangle.

Is there an option for a more authentic timber proportion?

A deeper bottom rail is available and it is the single detail that does most for authenticity, because it restores the visual weight a traditional timber sash had at the bottom. Sash horns can be included or left off, and the glazing bars can be set inside the sealed unit or applied externally as astragal bars.
