What is built in Hertfordshire
Our Hertfordshire catchment is the south west corner: Rickmansworth, Chorleywood and St Albans. Rickmansworth and Chorleywood are Metroland in its purest form, developed hard between the wars around the Metropolitan line, with large interwar semi-detached and detached houses on generous plots and a good deal of Arts and Crafts influence in the detailing. St Albans is older and denser, with a Georgian and Victorian core, tall terraced frontages near the centre and protected streets around the cathedral and the older parts of the city.
What that means for your windows
Interwar Metroland houses are one of the easier cases to get right and one of the easiest to get wrong. They were built with a specific window rhythm, often with a divided upper pane over a clear lower one, and reproducing that pattern is what keeps the elevation looking like itself. Georgian bar layouts inside the sealed unit handle it without the maintenance of external bars, though external astragal bars are available where a closer match is wanted. In St Albans, the older central streets need the conservation conversation first, as they would anywhere with protected frontage.
