Chorleywood grew around its common and its station into one of the defining Metroland settlements, and its housing carries a strong Arts and Crafts influence: roughcast render, tile hanging, deep eaves and deliberately irregular elevations, alongside the more conventional interwar semi-detached and detached stock. Around the common the plots are large and wooded, and later twentieth century housing fills in toward Chorleywood West and the Rickmansworth side.

Questions we get asked in Chorleywood
Will a modern window look out of place on a roughcast Arts and Crafts house?
It can, and the usual cause is surface rather than shape. A flat white frame reads as plastic against roughcast and tile. A woodgrain foil, a colour chosen against the render and a bar layout that matches the original pattern deal with almost all of it, and a deeper bottom rail restores the visual weight a timber window had.
Can you fit windows to houses backing onto the common?
Yes. Those plots tend to be large and wooded with variable access, which the survey assesses along with the openings. The tilt in feature is worth having on a property like that, since the back of the house is often the hardest place to get a ladder to.
