Sliding sash windows in Wantage
A market town under the downs, with a formal square at its centre and open country immediately beyond.
What is built in Wantage
Wantage is built around its market place, with Georgian and Victorian brick and rendered frontages facing the square and the streets running off it, and a protected core. Around the centre there are Victorian terraces and then twentieth century housing spreading across the lower slopes of the Vale, with the escarpment of the Berkshire Downs rising immediately to the south and a number of surrounding villages of older stone and brick construction.
What that means for your windows
Being under the downs means exposure on the southern elevations, and the tested figures matter more here than in a sheltered town centre. Wind resistance is Class C4 at 1600 Pa and water tightness Class 7A, with a colour matched weather bar joined to the bottom sash. On the market place frontages the emphasis reverses and the pane divisions and colour do the work, with any RAL shade or a Farrow and Ball match available to sit against brick or render.
Two ways to buy in Wantage
Wantage is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.
- Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
- Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.
1.3 W/m²K as standard, 1.2 with enhanced glazing.
Secured by Design available, satisfying Document Q.
Equivalent to gusts of up to around 115mph.
Plus our workmanship where we have fitted them.
Questions we get asked in Wantage
Which finish lasts best on a weather-facing elevation?
The foil finishes are a surface on the frame rather than a paint film, so they do not need recoating the way painted timber does, and that holds on an exposed elevation as much as a sheltered one. Maintenance is washing them down. The weather performance itself comes from the frame and the weather bar rather than from the colour.
Can I have obscure glass in a bathroom and clear elsewhere?
Yes, glass is specified per window rather than per house. Obscure in bathrooms, acoustic on a road frontage, solar control on a room that overheats and standard toughened everywhere else is a normal single order, and the surveyor works through it room by room.
