Sliding sash windows in Wheatley
A stone village on the hill east of Oxford, with an old core and a lot of later housing behind it.
What is built in Wheatley
Wheatley is built largely in the local stone that was quarried here, with an older village centre of seventeenth to nineteenth century cottages and houses along the High Street and the lanes off it, including a number of protected buildings. Around that core the village grew substantially through the twentieth century with conventional brick housing, and it sits on rising ground with the Oxford bypass and open country immediately below.
What that means for your windows
The older stone cottages have small, deep, individual openings and thick walls, which means measuring each one and, where the head is curved, making a shaped frame to suit. The later housing behind the village is entirely conventional and the decision moves to specification: A plus rating as standard, PAS 24: 2022 security, and both sashes tilting inwards, which matters on a sloping site where reaching the back of the house with a ladder is awkward.
Two ways to buy in Wheatley
Wheatley is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.
- Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
- Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.
1.3 W/m²K as standard, 1.2 with enhanced glazing.
Secured by Design available, satisfying Document Q.
Equivalent to gusts of up to around 115mph.
Plus our workmanship where we have fitted them.
Questions we get asked in Wheatley
How much maintenance do these windows need?
Washing the frames and the glass, and keeping the hardware clean. There is no repainting, because the foil is a surface finish on the frame rather than a paint film, and that is usually the main practical reason people move away from timber on a house where the windows needed doing every few years.
Do both sashes really tilt, or just the top one?
Both. Two tilt knobs are standard, and each sash tilts inward into the room independently, so the whole outer face of the window can be reached from inside. On an upper floor that removes the ladder entirely.
