Sliding sash windows in Marlow

A Georgian Thames town where the frontages are the attraction and the windows are a large part of them.

What is built in Marlow

Marlow's centre is one of the most formal streetscapes in the county: Georgian brick frontages running down the high street toward the river, with tall, regularly spaced windows and a strong horizontal rhythm across each elevation. A lot of it is listed or in a conservation area. Away from the centre the town holds Victorian terraces, substantial Edwardian villas along the roads out, and twentieth century housing spreading toward Marlow Bottom and the bypass.

What that means for your windows

Georgian frontages are unforgiving, because the whole effect depends on the window being a grid of similar panes in a slim frame. Thicken the frames or lose the divisions and the elevation goes flat, which is why the specification here starts with the glazing bar layout and the sightlines rather than the hardware. A deeper bottom rail is usually worth having on this stock, since it restores the visual weight that a timber sash had. Riverside properties also raise the question of exposure, where the tested water tightness figures matter.

Two ways to buy in Marlow

Marlow is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.

  • Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
  • Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.

Questions we get asked in Marlow

Will a replacement look right on a Georgian frontage?

It depends almost entirely on the pane divisions and the sightlines. Reproduce the original grid and keep the frames slim and the elevation still reads as it should. A deeper bottom rail restores the visual weight of the timber sash, and the choice between Georgian bars inside the sealed unit and external astragal bars is worth making deliberately rather than by default.

Do you work on riverside properties in Marlow?

Yes. The relevant figures for an exposed river frontage are water tightness at Class 7A at 300 Pa and air permeability at Class 4 at 600 Pa, both classified under BS 6375-1, with a weather bar mechanically joined to the bottom sash and colour matched. Those are the parts that keep driven rain off the sill and out of the frame.
