Sliding sash windows in Twyford

A village that grew around a railway junction, with the housing and the noise that come with one.

What is built in Twyford

Twyford developed around its station and the junction of the Henley branch, and the housing follows: Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semi-detached houses near the line, a village core with older brick buildings around the church and the main street, and extensive twentieth century and recent development spreading toward Ruscombe and Charvil. It is a compact place with a lot of housing close to the railway corridor.

What that means for your windows

Where houses sit near a working line, acoustic glass is the option that changes how the rooms feel, and it is worth putting on the elevations facing the track rather than the whole house. The other half of that is the fit itself: a made to measure frame fills the opening rather than being packed into it, which closes the gaps that let sound in around the edges of an older replacement. On the newer housing away from the line the ordinary specification applies.

Two ways to buy in Twyford

Twyford is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.

  • Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
  • Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.

Questions we get asked in Twyford

Will acoustic glass stop railway noise completely?

It reduces it noticeably rather than eliminating it, and the honest answer is that no window removes noise entirely. What acoustic glass and a properly fitted frame do together is take the sharp edge off and stop the leakage around the frame, which is often the larger part of the problem in an older window.

Do trickle vents let noise in?

Trickle vents are concealed rather than sitting as a visible bar across the head of the window, and the surveyor specifies what the building actually needs under Part F rather than fitting them everywhere by default. Head vents are standard and sash vents are available on request, so there is room to place them where they cause least nuisance.
