Sliding sash windows in Godalming
An old wool town on the Wey with a high street of real age, and Victorian streets climbing away from it.
What is built in Godalming
Godalming's centre is a well preserved market town: timber framed buildings behind later fronts, Georgian brick and rendered frontages, the old town hall at the crossing, and a substantial listed and protected core. The town grew with the wool and later the leather trades, and the Victorian housing that came with that expansion runs up the slopes on both sides of the Wey valley, with twentieth century development beyond.
What that means for your windows
Where Georgian fronts sit over older timber framed structures, the elevation is more regular than the building behind it, and window openings frequently vary despite looking uniform from the pavement. Measuring each individually is what avoids that trap. On the appearance side this is a town where external astragal bars usually beat bars inside the sealed unit, because the shadow line they cast is what makes a divided window read correctly on an old frontage.
Two ways to buy in Godalming
Godalming is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.
- Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
- Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.

Questions we get asked in Godalming
Which bar type looks most authentic on an old frontage?
External astragal bars, because they stand proud of the glass and cast a shadow the way a real glazing bar does. Georgian bars inside the sealed unit give the pattern with nothing outside to maintain, which suits a plainer house. On a protected frontage the astragal bar is usually the one worth paying for.
Can you work around a timber-framed structure?
The window is made to the surveyed opening, so an irregular or out of square opening in a timber framed building is accommodated rather than forced. What the surveyor is checking is the condition of the surrounding structure as well as the size, because that affects how the old frame comes out.
