Sliding sash windows in Guildford

A cobbled High Street of Georgian frontages, and streets of Victorian terraces climbing the hills on either side.

What is built in Guildford

Guildford's High Street runs steeply between Georgian and earlier frontages, heavily listed, with the Guildhall clock over it and older structures behind many of the fronts. Away from the centre the town is largely Victorian and Edwardian: terraces and semi-detached villas built up the slopes on both sides of the Wey valley, generously windowed, with twentieth century development spreading out toward Burpham, Merrow and the university side.

What that means for your windows

Guildford's hillside terraces have a particular quirk, which is that a stepped street changes how a run of windows reads. Each house sits slightly higher than its neighbour, so the horizontal lines that would normally align do not, and the pane divisions become the thing holding the row together visually. Getting those right matters more here than on a flat street. In the protected centre, the local authority's position governs the specification and needs establishing first.

Two ways to buy in Guildford

Guildford is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.

  • Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
  • Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.

Questions we get asked in Guildford

Do you work in Guildford town centre's conservation areas?

Yes, subject to the local authority's view, which needs settling before anything is specified. Where a replacement is permitted, we work to what has been agreed on pane divisions, sightlines, external astragal bars and colour. The planning decision is theirs and we would not want you relying on us for it.

Is there a survey charge?

The survey is free and carries no obligation, and it does not come with a salesman staying for two hours. Its purpose is to measure the openings accurately and see the condition of what is there, which is what allows the quotation to be written against real sizes rather than estimates.
