Sliding sash windows across Surrey

Victorian commuter suburbs, Edwardian villas and the private estates of the Thames valley. We survey, supply and fit across Surrey.

What is built in Surrey

Surrey's housing follows its railways. The arrival of the line produced a belt of substantial late Victorian and Edwardian villas around Guildford, Woking, Weybridge and Godalming, generously windowed, usually with tall sashes to the front rooms and bays to the ground floor. Around Esher, Cobham, Oxshott and Virginia Water the plots grow and the houses are largely twentieth century and later, including the private estates where an estate management company takes an interest in what the front of the house looks like. Farnham and Godalming keep older, more formal Georgian centres.

What that means for your windows

Two things come up in Surrey more than elsewhere. The first is the bay window, which is on a very large share of the villa stock and is the single most common thing done badly in a replacement: a bay wants to stay a bay, with the angles held and the proportions kept, not flattened into a straight run of glass. The second is estate approval, where the colour and the pattern of the glazing bars may need to satisfy someone other than you. Any RAL colour and a Farrow and Ball match give enough room to meet almost any requirement of that kind.

Two ways to buy in Surrey

Surrey is inside the area our own fitting teams cover, so you can have the whole job done by one company. You can also buy the windows on their own if you have a builder already, which is how most trade customers order.

  • Supplied and fitted. We survey your openings before anything is ordered, so the sizes are our responsibility rather than yours. Our own teams fit, take the old windows away and make good the plaster line, and you get a FENSA certificate and an insurance-backed guarantee on completion.
  • Supplied only. You send a schedule of sizes, choose the colour, glass, hardware and glazing bar layout, and the windows are delivered kerbside for your own fitter. Popular with builders, developers, self-builders and landlords. On a supply-only order the sizes are yours, because nobody from our side has seen the openings.

Questions we get asked in Surrey

Can you replace sash windows in a bay?

Yes, both splay and box bays. The bay is measured as a whole at survey rather than as separate windows, because the angles and the way the frames meet decide whether it looks right afterwards. It is the part of the job worth getting a surveyor to see rather than estimating from photographs.

My estate has rules about window appearance. Can you work to them?

Usually, yes. Send us whatever the estate has issued in writing and we will specify against it. The colour range covers any classic RAL shade and Farrow and Ball matching, the inside and outside do not have to match each other, and glazing bar layouts can be set to a required pattern. Getting the requirement in writing before the survey saves a round of changes.
