The sash stock in York
Inside the walls York is medieval in plan with Georgian brick townhouses filling much of it, formally proportioned and heavily listed. Outside the walls the city is Victorian and Edwardian, with terraces in Bishophill, Holgate, South Bank and The Groves built as the railway and confectionery industries grew, most of them originally sashed and many with the pattern intact.
What we supply, and how it works
The two halves of the city need different specifications, and on a supply-only order the person deciding is usually a local builder or the owner working with one. Inside the walls, matched pane divisions, slim sightlines and external astragal bars are the levers, with shaped frames available where an opening has a curved head. Outside, the Victorian terraces are consistent and repeatable, which makes a single schedule across a run of houses straightforward.
This is a supply arrangement. You send a schedule of sizes, the windows are made to measure to it, and they are delivered kerbside to your address in York for your own contractor to put in. The sizes are yours, because the windows are built to the schedule you provide and nobody from our side has seen the openings.
What you control on the specification
- Colour.Eleven foils, five of them with a genuine woodgrain effect, plus any classic RAL shade sprayed or a Farrow & Ball colour matched. Dual colour available, so inside and outside need not agree.
- Glass. Toughened in both sashes as standard, with acoustic, laminated, solar control and obscure available and specified per window.
- Detailing. Deeper bottom rail, sash horns included or omitted, Georgian bars inside the sealed unit or external astragal bars, and shaped frames including Gothic, swept head and true arch.
- Hardware. Eight finishes including Antique Gold, with inset finger pulls and D handles as options.

Questions we get asked about York
Can you make windows for openings with curved or arched heads?
Yes. Shaped frames are available including Gothic, swept head and true arch, built to the profile on your schedule. On older frontages the head of an opening is frequently not a straight line, and squaring it off to suit a standard product is what makes a replacement look wrong.
Are the frames made from recycled material?
The frames use recycled PVC-U, and 100 per cent of post-industrial waste from production is returned into the production process. It is worth having if you are answering a specification question or reporting on a development.
