The sash stock in Hackney
Hackney holds pockets of genuine Georgian housing at Clapton, De Beauvoir Town and around London Fields, alongside a very large Victorian and Edwardian terraced stock across Dalston, Stoke Newington and Homerton. Conservation areas cover a good number of the better preserved streets, and much of the borough's stock has been converted or extended over the past few decades.
What we supply, and how it works
A borough where terraces are frequently altered has a specific consequence: neighbouring houses in a single run often no longer match each other, so the reference point for a replacement is the original pattern rather than whatever is next door. Photographing an original window before it comes out is the simplest way to record that pattern accurately for a schedule, and the glazing bar layout, horns and sightlines are then specified against it.
This is a supply arrangement. You send a schedule of sizes, the windows are made to measure to it, and they are delivered kerbside to your address in Hackney for your own contractor to put in. The sizes are yours, because the windows are built to the schedule you provide and nobody from our side has seen the openings.
What you control on the specification
- Colour.Eleven foils, five of them with a genuine woodgrain effect, plus any classic RAL shade sprayed or a Farrow & Ball colour matched. Dual colour available, so inside and outside need not agree.
- Glass. Toughened in both sashes as standard, with acoustic, laminated, solar control and obscure available and specified per window.
- Detailing. Deeper bottom rail, sash horns included or omitted, Georgian bars inside the sealed unit or external astragal bars, and shaped frames including Gothic, swept head and true arch.
- Hardware. Eight finishes including Antique Gold, with inset finger pulls and D handles as options.

Questions we get asked about Hackney
How do I record an existing window pattern for the order?
Photograph it before it is removed, straight on rather than at an angle, and note the number and arrangement of panes, whether horns are present and the frame colour. Those four things plus the measured size are what the specification needs to reproduce it.
Which glazing bar option should I choose?
Georgian bars sit inside the sealed unit, leaving a flat outer face with nothing to maintain, which suits plainer or rear elevations. External astragal bars are applied to the outside and cast a shadow line, which reads far closer to an original divided window on a formal frontage.
